NCPA Jazz festival to feature Isheeta Chakrvarty and other artists

Having first impressed audiences in the NCPA Jazz Festival, Isheeta Chakravarty was part of a band led by the iconic guitarist Carlton Kitto. Her versatility in the rendition of jazz enthralled audiences. She returns to the NCPA on March 15 2018, this time as leader of her own band to render an evening of jazz from the music of composers such as Gershwin, Cole Porter, Antonio Carlos Jobim amongst others. Her jazz vocal idols are Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald Kurt Elling and Carmen MacRae.

An Indian classically trained singer with a voice modulation honed for jazz singing she will be performing classic jazz renditions of standards.  Isheeta will be accompanied by a stellar all-star international band comprising of Christos Yerolatsitis (Cyprus) on piano, Aron Nyiro (Hungary) on drums, Gianluca Liberatore (Italy) on acoustic bass and Shirish Malhotra (India) on tenor saxophone.

About the Artists:

Aron Nyiro:

In 2012, Aron was accepted to the Master program of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam which further widened his musical horizon. His teachers were Martijn Vink, Lucas van Merwijk and Marcel Serierse. He graduated in 2014 and started establishing a professional practice by taking gigs, tours, and studio-work all around Europe. Aron appeared on more than two-dozen albums, several TV shows and on countless stages so far. During the years spent in Budapest he also started giving private drum lessons, which he continues to do so ever since. Aron is also a big fan of recording live music. He was running a project studio for years in Budapest.

Shirish Malhotra:

Multi-instrumentalist Shirish Malhotra is a performer, recording artist and teacher whose musical experience has led him to explore a wide and eclectic range of musical styles, from western classical to jazz and African and Latin-American folk traditions. He has performed with some of India’s most respected musicians- Sanjay Divecha, Karan Joseph, Louiz Banks, Loy Mendonsa, Ustad Fazal Qureishi and others. As well as several orchestras such as the Symphony Orchestra of India, Bombay Chamber orchestra. He has also collaborated with musicians on several scholarship projects in the US, China, Austria and Scotland.

Christos Yerolatsitis:

Christos Yerolatsitis is a jazz pianist from Cyprus. He started to play piano at the age of seven. After several years of classical training he graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2007 with a distinction. Afterwards he did his service in the army, where he served in the music band. That was the point when he started playing with many important figures of the Cypriot jazz scene, like Charis Ioannou, Ioannis Vafeas, Irenaeos Koulouras and Gabriel Karapatakis. Soon enough, he joined the “Cyprus Jazz Big Band”, where he was the main pianist. At the same time, Christos was also having jazz theory and improvisation lessons with his teacher and mentor Ioannis Savidis.

Gianluca Liberatore:

Gianluca Liberatore was born in Palermo, Sicily. The Italian island is the major in the Mediterranean sea and it has always been hosting an astonishing mix of cultures. The search for diversity became for Gianluca an important feature in his musical experience. He started playing the guitar at the age of 12 and the bass guitar at 14. Gianluca studied in Italy at the Brass Group and the Open Jazz School of Mimmo Cafiero, attending masterclasses and having lessons with Harvie S, Reuben Rogers, Eric Revis, Eddie Gomez, Clark Cables, Gregory Hutchinson and others.
