An Interview with Raxit Tewari of Sky Rabbit

Your Chin is the solo project of Raxit Tewari, front man of Mumbai based indie band Sky Rabbit – that’s been building a buzz in the Indian indie scene since releasing his first self-titled EP mid-2012. The EP won the support of the scene’s dedicated fan base as well as rave reviews by music journalists. The momentum and the word of mouth helped Your Chin play a whole bunch of festivals and club dates through the rest of the year and the next one. The journey started with Raxit’s love for bringing varied sounds together into a great composition. Your Chin has a danceable lively electro pop sound layered with muddy beats that lend his seemingly indecipherable urban lyrics a joyful complexity.

He has had a good ride with his electronic music project Your Chin in the last five years, playing at clubs across the country and being a favorite for an early set at festivals ranging from Sunburn in Goa to Indie March in Bengaluru.

He recently released his new track Luv Important on 18th November 2019 exclusively on Vh1 India. He speaks to Musicunplugged.in on his career graph and the new music he just done.

What inspired you to get into music at such a young age? When was the moment you knew that this just had to be pursued?

I guess, it was more or less straight after school. There was never really a particular moment where I felt it had to be pursued. One thing led to another, really.

Who is your idol? Which is the one track you listen which makes you feel like Music is everything?

That’s really hard to say. There are various different kinds of artists I’d listen to from time to time depending on how I’m feeling or how I’d like to feel.  A lot of the times I’m listening to tracks my friends make or listen.

Do you plan to experiment with more genres of music? How is it currently working out for you?

It’s kind of hard to imagine a very strict idea of a genre anymore. For me personally, it is more about finding the right kind of sounds to carry a song forward.

You are releasing a soundtrack after 3 years! How does it feel?

It feels great. I’m quite excited about sharing the new track and the video with it.

Why the long break?

It’s a decently long process trying to write, produce and mix by yourself. It’s incredibly hard to be very quickly and impulsively sure of yourself through those processes. That said, I’d definitely like to be a bit more prolific than that.

Tell us about your new track, what does it bring out?

The new track’s called Luv Important. It’s set in a version of reality where love is a listicle. A 10 step guide - so to speak. The song and the video for it are like a rolodex of people navigating through this reality.

Is there any upcoming collaboration of yours we can look forward to?

The track Luv Important and the video for it is definitely a collaboration I’m excited about. Bopanna (the video director) and I sat for many a months trying to figure the best way to portray this track visually. It was a very fruitful experience and I can’t wait for everyone to dip their toes into it.

What are your thoughts on Bollywood?

I don’t know. That depends a lot on what Bollywood means. There’s a bunch of films and documentaries coming out of the country which are very well told and quite nicely done.

What’s up for the future shows and 2020?

I’ve been a touring musician for so long and not having people at gigs is just, such a part of life, you know? You realize that depends on so many variables. No plans for the New Year yet let’s see what 2020 as in store.
