New Chamber St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra makes India debut at NCPA

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) will present the India debut of the New Chamber St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra on 15th September 2026 at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai.

Conducted by Yaroslav Zaboyarkin, the performance will celebrate the rich traditions of Russian classical music while highlighting the enduring cultural exchange between India and Russia. The programme will commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich and feature works by Shostakovich, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and other celebrated composers.

Founded in 2020 by conductor Yaroslav Zaboyarkin with the support of the renowned Russian conductor Yuri Temirkanov, the New Chamber St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra represents a new generation of musicians carrying forward the artistic legacy of St. Petersburg’s distinguished musical institutions. The ensemble brings together outstanding young artistes, members of the renowned St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and musicians associated with the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

The orchestra’s India debut marks an important milestone in its international journey and reflects the continued role of music in strengthening cultural connections between nations. The visit comes at a time of growing artistic exchange between India and Russia, showcasing how classical music continues to create meaningful dialogue across cultures.

Known for its commitment to artistic exploration, the New Chamber St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra has established itself through performances that bring fresh interpretations to celebrated repertoire while also rediscovering lesser-known works. Its international performances, premieres and cultural exchange projects reflect an approach that balances the preservation of musical traditions with a curiosity for new artistic possibilities.

At the centre of this Mumbai performance is the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, a composer whose legacy is deeply connected with St. Petersburg. The musicians of the orchestra share a unique relationship with his works, having emerged from the same musical environment that shaped his artistic journey.

“We are musicians brought up in Dmitry Shostakovich’s hometown. We perform as part of an orchestra considered one of the finest interpreters of his music. The music of Shostakovich flows in our veins. For us, this creative connection is very important.” says Yaroslav Zaboyarkin.

The New Chamber St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra’s debut at the NCPA offers Mumbai audiences an opportunity to experience the distinctive sound of St. Petersburg’s musical heritage through the perspective of a contemporary ensemble. The presentation is supported by VTB Bank as General Partner.
