Sony Music releases ‘Maya’ as a dedication to maestro Ravi Shankar

Global music giant Sony Music collaborates with world renowned percussionist Bickram Ghosh to release “Maya” that celebrates Ravi Shankar and his legacy of peace through music.

Using Hindu philosophy’s concept of Maya - the irresistible veil behind which the world conceals the real character of spiritual reality, Bickram Ghosh presents an ode to the beauty of this illusion. This is a part of East Meets West Music’s the UTSAV! Series.

Bickram Ghosh and the legendary Ravi Shankar’s relationship spans back to over a decade during which phase the tabla virtuoso performed on the maestro’s Grammy winning album “Full Circle”
Says Bickram Ghosh, “He made me what I am today. Besides influencing my tabla playing he also influenced me hugely in all of my compositional work spanning over 30 albums and 25 feature films I have always been drawn by the evocativeness of his compositions with the subtle rhythmic interplays, the harmonious intermingling of both east and west, his mind bending melodic inventions and improvisations. He is a true star of world music and his body of work is a never ending gift.”

With this album, Oscar contender Bickram Ghosh, himself one of the pioneers of Neo -classical Indo-fusion and a master weaver of musical tales takes the listener on a journey that traverses and explores the terrain that the Maya of life conjures and that deeper sense of the world, lying just underneath waiting to be discovered.

Adding on Sukanya Shankar says, “I am so pleased that we can release this wonderful recording of his through East Meets West’s UTSAV! series. It is apropos of this series as it is the blossoming of a disciple into a wonderful musician and because Raviji always was so encouraging of the place of percussion in Indian Classical music. In fact, he was the first musician to put down his instrument in performance and let the Tabla player take off. He brought out the importance of percussion in Indian classical music. It has also touched me deeply that Bickram could recognize the pure brilliance of Raviji’s compositions and calculations and the complete musician that he was.”

Sony Music has been working with East Meets West Music since 2016 to release a range of rare recordings by the maestro for his fans in India.

Titled as 'Living room Sessions I and II', these recordings are legendary artists’ music which he wanted for his fans in India to have access to. And now working with world renowned percussionist Bickram Ghosh on his album, Arjun Sankalia, Head Special Projects and International Music, Sony Music India says, ”Releasing Maya is a concerted effort to promote India’s rich musical heritage across the globe. We are proud to be collaborating with leading percussionist and composer Bickram Ghosh on the album that celebrates Pt. Ravi Shankar’s musical legacy.”

Like the global influence and collaborative nature of the maestro, 'Maya' features artists from all over the world! The Mastering of the album has been done by Grammy Award winner Barry Philips while the entire music has been composed by Bickram Ghosh.
