Artistes from across the country come together for International Jazz Day at the NCPA

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai and Louiz Banks brings together over 2 dozen Jazz artists from across India to celebrate International Jazz Day, 2022.

In Mumbai, International Jazz Day has been celebrated for the last 10 years. The 11th edition, curated by Louiz Banks, will feature a huge array of artistes spread over a span of three hours. From jazz standards to jazz fusion, the concert will feature some of the finest musicians and singers in the country. The NCPA along with Banks celebrates this iconic day live at the Tata Theatre, Mumbai, in association with UNESCO and The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.

The all Indian lineup includes Vasundhara Vee, Gino Banks, Sheldon D’Silva, Rajeev Raja, Rhythm Shaw, Shreya Bhattacharya, to Rahul Wadhwani, Ella Castellino Atai and Marie Paul, among many others, not forgetting the Godfather of Indian Jazz Louiz Banks.

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people together with legendary jazz pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock. Hancock wanted to celebrate the diplomatic role of jazz in unifying people all around the world, and thus International Jazz Day was born. Countries from Argentina to Zambia throw jam sessions, music clinics, concerts and more, each with their own unique cultural flavor.

Teachers and students around the world use International Jazz Day as an opportunity to learn more about the empowering history and legacy of jazz music. Jazz stands for music promising hope and freedom. Celebration of International Jazz Day brings together communities, in learning about jazz and its roots along with raising awareness amongst cultures as a promotion of peace and freedom of expression.
