22nd June, 2025Independent artist Zian B recently released her new single, Ace of Spades on 20th June, 2025 — a date that also marks her birthday. Rooted in her personal battle with a severe spinal injury, the track explores resilience, uncertainty, and the beauty of discovering light in life’s darkest moments.
Written during a grueling recovery from a prolapsed disc and sciatica, the song emerged from a time of deep emotional and physical upheaval. "I felt stuck, frustrated, and angry, not just because my body was failing me, but because I couldn’t do the things I loved, or even handle simple daily tasks,” Zian shares. "This song is my way of saying: even when life throws you curveballs you can’t control, you still get to choose how you face them."
Musically, Ace of Spades blends contemporary jazz and neo-soul textures, with layered instrumentation that mirrors Zian’s emotional arc, from despair to resolve. “I didn’t want the song to sound gloomy,” Zian explains. “It had to sound like hope. I wanted it to uplift — to romanticize the small wins and create something that helps people feel better, not broken.”
The title track uses the iconic card as a metaphor for struggle, luck, and navigating high-stakes situations: What hand will you play when the odds are stacked against you? Zian hopes the track resonates with anyone grappling with quiet battles, particularly those recovering from injury. “People expect you to ‘bounce back,’ but healing isn’t linear,” she says. “Sometimes, it’s not even possible in the way others expect. This song is for those moments, when you just need something to help you get through.”
The track features an international lineup of collaborators: Anurag Naidu and Ishan Jadwani from Mumbai, Yann Phayphet from France, and her brother Tizaan Alphonso from the Netherlands, who also co-wrote and produced the track.
"This song isn’t just a comeback, it’s me showing up. For myself, and for anyone who needs to feel seen," Zian says. "If it brings a little light to someone’s day, I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do."
For those who may not know, Zian is a Mumbai-based jazz singer-songwriter and vocal coach, known for her signature vocal improvisation and scatting. Over her 16-year journey in India’s jazz circuit, she has developed a style influenced by greats like Cyrille Aimée, Jane Monheit, Jazzmeia Horn, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Diana Krall.
She holds a Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA) and built a successful career in the healthcare industry before transitioning into music full-time. Music runs in her blood — raised by a professional singer mother and a seasoned bass guitarist father, Zian began performing in her family’s band at a young age. Her love for jazz led her to pursue formal studies in Germany and the Netherlands, under the mentorship of Sabine Kühlich, vocal head at Conservatorium Maastricht.
Zian has graced prestigious stages such as NCPA, Prithvi Theatre, Soho House, Quorum, Slink and Bardot, Bonobo, and several luxury hotels. She’s performed at music festivals, corporate events, and private showcases across India, sharing the stage with artists like Louis Banks, Gino Banks, Sanjay Divecha, Guy Bernfeld, Joe Alvares, Adrian D’Souza, Satyajit Talwalkar, and Purbayan Chatterjee. She has also collaborated with Bombay Jazz Club and lent her voice to commercial projects for brands like Amazon, Mebaaz, and the Indian edition of American Idol.
Her debut single, Uncertain, released in December 2024, garnered praise from quite a few publications and music journalists.
