Mahindra Kabira Festival 2025 ends with lyrical ode to Varanasi and Kabir’s Timeless Legacy

The ghats of Varanasi resonated with music, poetry, camaraderie and reflection as the Mahindra Kabira Festival 2025 returned to the historic city, reaffirming its annual tribute to the 15th-century mystic poet-saint Kabir, instituted by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts.

The Festival brought together eminent musicians, scholars, and cultural practitioners to explore Kabir’s enduring philosophy of truth, inclusivity, and fearless self-inquiry.

The Festival opened on 19 December at Guleria Kothi with a serene Ganga Aarti, setting a contemplative tone for the days ahead. The opening evening featured reflections on Kabir’s life and philosophy by Umesh Kabir, educator and researcher from the Kabir Chaura Math Ashram, followed by Kabiriyat, a stirring qawwali performance by Rehmat-e-Nusrat, the Kumaon-based ensemble inspired by the legacy of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The Festival continued on 20 December, with Sublime Morning sessions at Guleria Kothi, open to the public, with mellifluous Indian classical vocal renditions by Swati Tiwari, followed by a refined sitar recital by Hidayat Husain Khan, son of Ustad Vilayat Khan. Evocative Afternoons explored Kabir as both mystic and craftsman through Kabir the Julaha: Verses from the Loom, featuring Dholak Rani by Shivangini feat. Isha Priya Singh, reimagining Kabir’s verses through rhythm and voice. As dusk descended, Eclectic Evenings at Shivala Ghat came alive with Kabir Baani by folk musician Mahesha Ram, rooted in the Bhakti traditions of the Meghwal community, followed by a powerful and nuanced vocal performance by Rahul Deshpande.

Alongside the performances, delegates and visitors participated in thoughtfully curated Heritage Walks, including the Panchganga Walk, and mandir visits, traversing both the physical and metaphysical landscapes of Kabir’s Varanasi. These immersive engagements offered rare insights into the city’s layered heritage—its sacred spaces, alleyways, crafts, cuisine, and everyday rhythms that shaped Kabir’s thought and verse, across two days

Also, complementing the festival’s performances, the Mahindra Kabira Festival conducted a three-day Outreach Programme (18–20 November) across schools and colleges in Varanasi, engaging students with Kabir’s teachings. This initiative, called The Kabira Art Projectin collaboration  with our Festival AdvisorAnubhav Nath (Director, Ojas Art), brought together students and artists from across the region to exhibit alongside renowned practitioners.

The Festival drew to a luminous close on 21 December - the day began at Guleria Kothi with a Hindustani vocal and khayal recital by Tejaswini Vernekar, followed by a nuanced sarod performance by Debasmita Bhattacharya. An Evocative Afternoon with Nij Brahma Vichar – Reflections on the Truth, an erudite discourse by Purushottam Agrawal, offering profound insights into Kabir’s philosophy and contemporary relevance. The grand finale was the Eclectic Evening at Shivala Ghat, where the Aditya Prakash Ensemble delivered an ebullient and evocative performance, followed by a powerful closing set by Agam, blending contemporary soundscapes with spiritual intensity against the timeless backdrop of the Ganga.

With its conclusion on 21 December, the Mahindra Kabira Festival 2025is back as a singular cultural platform that seamlessly brings together music, scholarship, lived heritage, and spiritual exploration—situating Kabir not just as a figure of the past, but a visionary who continues to speak meaningfully to the present.
