Tsumyoki bridges Goa and Africa on ‘Mia’ featuring Nigerian artist Muyeez

Following the release of YOU & I, Goa-born artist Tsumyoki returns with MIA, out today via Empire in partnership with Gully Gang Entertainment. The track is the second single from his upcoming EP ‘Afro Yoki’.

Featuring Nigerian artist Muyeez, the track builds on Tsumyoki's signature "Goan Bounce" sound, rooted in Goa's long history of Portuguese and African influences, blending lush guitars, warm melodies and rhythmic percussion inspired by contemporary Afrobeats. Together, Tsumyoki and Muyeez bring over 600 million combined streams, uniting one of India's most genre-defying artists with one of Nigeria's fastest-rising voices.

For Tsumyoki, the collaboration is rooted in personal history. Growing up in Goa's uniquely multicultural environment, music from Africa, Portugal and Brazil was part of everyday life.

"Goa is such a culmination of different cultures," says Tsumyoki. "We have global influence from Portuguese to British, even African communities who speak Konkani that settled down in Goa. As a kid I've grown up with so many different music cultures around me.”

His grandfather, a musician, would return home with cassette recordings of songs he taped off the radio while working overseas, introducing a young Tsumyoki to legends like Fela Kuti and Miriam Makeba long before he discovered hip-hop.

“I remember him playing Fela's Water No Get No Enemy and Miriam Makeba's Pata Pata a lot. This was the first time I was introduced to music by African artists. When I started listening to Afrobeats, I realised the rhythms felt strangely familiar - they reminded me of Goan music. That's what AFRO YOKI is about: connecting all the cultures I grew up around." says Tsumyoki.

Years later, opening for Rema on his India tour in 2023 became a turning point. Says Tsumyoki,"Something about the way he performed his songs, the stage presence, the cadence, made me fall deeper in love with the genre. It sparked something inside me. In this EP, I have tried to take that feeling and mix it with Goan instrumentation, that's why I called the EP AFRO YOKI."

While MIA leans into modern Afrobeats, its DNA stretches across continents. The collaboration introduces Indian audiences to Muyeez, a leading voice in Nigeria's new wave of Afrobeats, bringing together two artists shaped by distinct yet interconnected musical traditions. Inspired by Goan icons Lorna and Chris Perry, alongside Cape Verdean musician Tito Paris, ‘MIA’ reflects the musical exchange that has long connected Goa with Africa and Portugal.

Following You & I ‘MIA’ offers another glimpse into ‘Afro Yoki’, Tsumyoki's most personal project yet. Ahead of the release of ‘Afro Yoki’, he is also embarking on his maiden tour of the United Kingdom in July, before taking the project on a nationwide India tour later this year.

The EP ‘Afro Yoki’ will be out on all streaming platforms on 7th August 2026.
