Mumbai metal act Midhaven win coveted Wacken Metal Battle India, set to represent the country at the ‘Mecca of Metal’, Germany

Critically acclaimed heavy psych/sludge metal band Midhaven won Wacken Metal Battle India 2026, earning the honour of representing the country at the world-famous Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, in July, setting another milestone for Indian metal on the global stage.

The Mumbai-based metal outfit has emerged as the winner of Wacken Metal Battle India 2026, earning the right to represent the country at international Wacken Metal Battle finals at the ‘Mecca of Metal’ -  Wacken Open Air. Held in Wacken, Germany and widely regarded as the largest heavy metal festival of the world. This year's lineup has legendary acts including Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Powerwolf, Sabaton, Sepultura and Lamb of God.

“We're extremely humbled and grateful to have won the Indian leg of Wacken Metal Battle and to represent our country at one of the largest metal stages on the face of the earth,” says Karan Kaul (vocals/guitars). Bandmate Aditya Mohanan (lead guitars/vocals), further adds,“It's a privilege to share the stage with bands we've grown up listening to and to represent Indian culture on the world stage.”

Midhaven secured the title after competing against some of India's strongest underground bands. What continues to set Midhaven apart is their distinctive musical language. Rather than borrowing from Western metal traditions, the band weaves heavy psych and sludge metal with the tonal depth of Indian ragas into something dense, immersive, and deliberate that draws deeply from mythology, philosophy and classical music.

Following their acclaimed 2021 concept album Of The Lotus & The Thunderbolt, the band recently released The Veiler, a powerful new single inspired by Raag Todi. Exploring arrogance through the metaphor of the Asura, the track combines thunderous riffs with layered storytelling and Midhaven's unmistakable oratory vocal style.

The Wacken India victory came just ahead of their impressive Europe tour that took the band across 19 cities in seven countries, including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Prague and Amsterdam. They also made history as the first Indian band to perform at Desertfest London, where their packed set drew queues outside the venue. British publications such as Kerrang, The Razor's Edge, v13, At The Barrier, Out of Rage praised the performance, noting the electric atmosphere as both band and audience realised they were witnessing something special.

The band members were overwhelmed by the response. Beyond enthusiastic crowds, every piece of tour merchandise sold out. “It's proof that audiences are embracing not just Indian metal, but the distinctly Indian identity within it,” says Aditya. Karan adds,“We're still processing the fact that we were the first Indian metal band to play Desertfest and Paris Grand Sludge.”

With Wacken now on the horizon, Midhaven isn't simply carrying India's metal flag to Germany. They're taking a sound that could only have come from here.

Founded back in 2011-12, Midhaven released their debut EP, ‘Tales From the Tide’, in 2013. Soon after they dropped their first EP, Midhaven became one of the first few indie/Metal bands of the country to be signed by a major multinational music label such as Universal Music Group (UMG).

Their first album ‘Spellbound’ was released by UMG in 2014. Blending traditional Indian strains with progressive Metal, the Mumbai-based act released their well-praised 2nd album titled ‘Of The Lotus & The Thunderbolt’ in 2021. Midhaven thinks of this seven-track concept album as their humble attempt to present a new shade of ‘Indian' Metal music.

Midhaven current line up is Karan Kaul, Aditya Mohanan, Aryaman Chatterji (Drums), Akash Vyas (Bass).
