One of the Boys – Katy Perry (Universal Music) Rs. 350/-

Another Avril Lavigne in the making, with the sober side belonging to Britney Spears one might say, similar songs with catchy lyrics packaged with a lot of sexual overtones. But sadly there are no catchy hooks that you would want to rewind to.

Katy’s debut effort sees the young lass as singer – songwriter on all the 12 songs some with a rocky edge, others popish and at other times taking the balladic groove. The lyrics to her songs range from tales of neurotic ex – boyfriends, breakups, love and deceit in Hot n Cold, Ur so Gay, Mannequin to crazy trips with her friends in Waking up in Vegas.

The 23 year old LA based catty crooner first came on the scene in late 2007 when she released her first EP Ur so Gay a neat piece with a lot of fun in its lyrics. I Kissed a Girl shows her rocky side with dynamite vocals backed by a lot of drum work and guitars playing around. Katy would find a lot of takers more for her honest ballads like Lost which is about trying to find yourself after losing your way and the emotionally charged I’m Breathing and Thinking of You.

Other good pieces would be the title track that has her razor sharp vocals and witty humor in her lyrics. Her pop rock album is filled with a lot of instrumentation which probably comes from her influences like Queen and from her producers she has worked with like Glen Ballard, Dave Stewart, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin on this album. A fairly passable album. Includes lyrics to all songs.
