Walk The Line

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin; Robert Patrick

A chronicle of country music legend Johnny Cash's life, from his early days on an Arkansas cotton farm to his rise to fame with Sun Records in Memphis, where he recorded alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. I was fortunate to have visited Sun Records when I visited the US in 2023 and stood on the very space Elvis, Jerry Lewis and Carl Perkins stood on.

‘Walk the Line’ has a rather rough task and tells the life story of one of America's most beloved singer, without diminishing any of what made him great. There's adultery and drug use here, but it never blots out the wounded, romantic soul that walks the line in the center of it, tangled in barbed-wire issues.

Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) grew up in the Great Depression era, an era in American history that treated no one well. He takes up an interest in music at a young age, much to his father’s disapproval. Eventually, we learn that Cash moved out of his hometown to join the air force. Being shipped to Germany only managed to encourage his musical ability, even more so somehow.

It was in Germany that Cash bought his very first guitar and found himself writing music. Over time as a grown up in the Air Force, he meets and marries his girlfriend Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin). Upon getting married after his time overseas, Cash found himself settling down in Tennessee with his wife and their first daughter. At first, he knew no matter how much he desired, his music would not be what supported his family. Instead of merely giving up on his dream, Cash found himself practicing with a group of guys while helping his family by being a salesman.

But his love of music never died. Despite Vivian wanting him to get a "real job," Cash successfully impressed a record executive Sam Philips (Dallas Roberts). But Phillips had his own agenda. He encouraged him to reach down where other artists had not gone and to do something else with his music career other than being another gospel singer. As Cash comes into his own and meets with Phillips’ needs, Phillips gets him and his band a job and a tour to showcase his music. Cash soon becomes a megastar with his very first album. While on tour, he encounters June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). He is immediately smitten by her beauty, professionally and personally.

But this growing love for June quickly destroyed his marriage, and his increasing drug use seemed to be doing the same to his career, even landing him in jail at one point. June stepped in to save him from his downward spiral, inspiring him to clean up his life and go back on the road. But his true goal was her hand in marriage.

When the tours grew longer, the friendship between the two slowly grew into something more. Cash’s drug addiction prompts June to leave the tour until he can regain composure, and his marriage slowly begins to dissolve. To gain back what he knows can be his, he must hit rock bottom and realize everything he can potentially lose first.

Drugs killed Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Whitney Houston and many other great musical legends. Fortunately for Johnny Cash with the angelic help of June Carter he got over it.

‘Walk the Line’ provides audiences not only an insight into the singer that we all knew and loved but of the true man behind that singer. Joaquin Phoenix totally stuns you by making it impossible to tell between him and Cash. He portrays Cash like no other man would have been able to for this feature from the look to the voice. It's not just a portrayal he did, he became Johnny Cash. His body language, his expressions, even his voice are all altered to be as close as possible to Cash's and yes, Phoenix sings Cash's songs to the best he possibly can giving a powerful, heartfelt performance. Never does a moment pass when the audience question's Phoenix's portrayal and he goes above and beyond to convince the viewers that he and Cash are one. Reese Witherspoon more than keeps up with her powerful co-star. She is a sympathetic beauty, much like June Carter, and she has the voice to boot. To undersell it, the chemistry between the two stars is totally engrossing. She gave her best and succeeded in portraying the love angle in the film perfectly.

All in all, ‘Walk the Line’ is a film about the man in black—a man named Johnny Cash. I cannot think of a better way to honor Cash's genius. At two hours long, you can feel the presence of Cash surrounding you with a story that is difficult to tell for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon ensure that a classic is what we get.
