Sun City - Artists United Against Apartheid - Various Artists

Artists United Against Apartheid was a 1985 protest group founded by Little Steven aka activist and performer Steven Van Zandt and record producer Arthur Baker to protest against apartheid in South Africa.

The group produced the song Sun City and the album Sun City that year, which is considered a notable anti-apartheid song. Artists United Against Apartheid was founded by activist and performer Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven) in 1985. Other organizers included Arthur Baker, Rick Dutka, Owen Epstein and Danny Schechter.

They produced the anti-apartheid record Sun City. Literally hundreds of performers, including Dolly Parton, Queen, Elton John and Liza Minnelli, played gigs at the Sun City resort in Bophuthatswana - a nominally independent "homeland" for black people created by the South African government to justify its racist policies.

The inner dust cover has loads of images of all the artists on one side with details about the event, artists who worked on the album, names of all the musicians, engineers and those who helped in making the album on the reverse. It also has the lyrics to the Sun City. While side A has the main song Sun City, No More Apartheid and Revolutionary Situation, Side B also has Sun City (Version II), Let me see your I.D and the song The Struggle Continues

The concerts were meant to raise awareness about Mandela and other political prisoners, who had been jailed by the then apartheid government. The team worked really hard as artists to make this project a success. It remains an undisputed milestone in music and cultural history.

The super group of musicians was brought together to fight racial injustice in South Africa. Sun City was a 1985 album that contained several versions of the Steven Van Zandt-led Artists United Against Apartheid's Sun City protest song against apartheid in South Africa as well as other selections in the same vein from that project.

Sun City, the landmark protest album, by Artists United Against Apartheid, also celebrated its 35th anniversary with a CD reissue.
