Dr Hook – Sometimes You Win….

If you’re a 70s music lover, you surely must have heard of the classic, When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman a US Top 10 hit by Dr. Hook. This 10 song album has a few more classics, however the above song is not in this playlist, you can find it on their previous album ‘Pleasure and Pain’ (1978). No one really knows the reason, but the super smash song When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman, was later included on some of the copies of ‘Sometimes You Win’ maybe in the hope to increase album sales. However this album doesn’t have the hit song.

So some copies have the chart buster as track 11, and others don't cause like the album cover screams, ‘Sometimes You Win’ and like Sometimes You Don't.

So that said and done, this is not their best but it's pretty darn good. While I do have the ‘Best of’ on CD, I still personally prefer listening to their music on vinyl. So their music here pretty much includes a mix of a lot of their pop stuff with a dash of pop rock – disco on a few songs.

The seven-piece band that consists of Ray Sawyer - Guitar, Vocals, Dennis Locorriere - Guitar, Vocals, Billy Francis - Keyboards, Vocals, John Wolters - Drums, Vocals, Rik Elswit - Guitar, Vocals, Jance Garfat – Bass and Bob "Willard" Henke - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals, bring forth a more sweetened sound with strings and disco with a selection of strong material that should appeal to dancers and listeners alike.

Dr Hook started out in the early 1970s and by the late 1970s, had evolved into a smooth pop rock band that was perfect for playing in the background of hotel lounges, shopping malls, and other places. With a few hits, they had some surprising success on the US singles charts with songs like .Better Love Next Time (near US Top 10 hit), Sexy Eyes (US Top 5 hit) and Years From Now (near US Top 40 hit) In Over My Head written by Even Stevens and Eddie Rabbit and Help Me Mama written by Ray Sawyer and Shel Silverstein are both very good songs while the rest might be just for a good listen. This is very much a chilled back production not some high energy pop charade, it has its catchy wonders, but they remain with a more relaxed vocal and instrumental approach for a relaxed yet positive vibed listening experience.

For those not familiar, album covers are a lost art form missing from CDs and this Dr Hook cover is really cool, bright green with creative artwork, photos of the band on the reverse.

An album that is guaranteed not to be left on the shelf. This is a fantastic project if you want a chilled out pop album believe me, its one of the best ever, such a wonderful flowing set of tracks to sway to.
